Greetings Templeton Fish and Game Members, Guests, and Community Members!
IMPORTANT ICE SAFETY WARNING: Despite the frigid temperatures in our area, anyone accessing the pond should be aware that the ice may not be safe in all areas. It was reported this week that there were some spots that are not solid and the recent heavy snow fall creates an insulation over the ice. The National Weather Service reports that Ice covered by snow is extremely hazardous because the snow acts as an insulator that hides weak, thin, or cracked ice, often slowing the freezing process. The snow also hides dangerous, thin ice on the pond, with the added weight of the snow further stressing the ice. White or "snow" ice is only about half as strong as clear ice. Please follow the recommended guidelines for ice thickness - for new, clear, solid ice starts at 4 inches (10 cm) for activities on foot (skating, ice fishing), increasing to 5-7 inches for snowmobiles/ATVs. Thank you in advance for your diligence if you are out and enjoying the frozen pond this winter.
